Drug-resistant gonorrhea: So-called mega-gonorrhea has now been reported in 36 countries around the world, as strains of the virus build up a resistance to the drugs that used to treat them. Without treatment, gonorrhea can cause women to become infertile and lead to blindness in unborn babies. In partnership with the World Health Organization, Thailand has set up a program to track the illness and ensure that patients are given the right kind of treatment for their strain of the disease. The prescription of disproportionately strong antibiotics has been a leading factor in the growth of mega-gonorrhea.
