In 1956, abortion became available upon request for the first twelve weeks of pregnancy in Bulgaria. However, there have been periods where abortion has been challenged or heavily restricted in the country. In 1968, the government was concerned about the declining birth rate -- and, in response, the government banned abortion services for childless women, except for cases when abortions were medically necessary. The government also discouraged abortions for women who had one or two children, though they typically received abortion services if they persistently requested such services. These restrictions were expanded in 1973, and abortions were banned for women with one child. Yet, in 1974, the laws changed again, and abortion was once again permitted for unmarried women.
