In 1985, Bangladesh launched an HIV prevention program. This helped the country prepare for its first reported HIV case in 1989. Generally speaking, HIV rates in Bangladesh are very low at less than 0.1% of the general population. For at-risk groups, this number is a bit higher, but still rather low (.7%). Some of the highest rates of HIV infection were found in sex worker populations of the Hili with a 2.7% infection rate.[1]
